As the family embraced affectionately and their tears mingled together, Alexander straightened and looked on as a quiet terror flooded his chest. If the wish had worked for Mirabel’s parents, had it also been the key to freeing his mother? If so, why hadn’t she come into the room yet? Was she even here at all? Was this even happening? Was the food from earlier causing them to hallucinate?

He blinked rapidly and rubbed at his eyes, hoping to clear them of anything intangible.

Somewhere behind the family, he thought he saw a shadow shifting. Then, with a polite clearing of her throat, Queen Thestous pushed her way into the room. She appeared as collected and refined as ever, not a single hair out of place nor a hint of smile on her ruby lips.

His heart swelled as they locked eyes. “Mother?”

“Alexander,” she said, opening her arms in a gesture for him to come close. “When will you ever learn to listen?”

He laughed and ran the short distance into her embrace, throwing his arms around her waist and squeezing as tightly as he dared. Relief washed over him in waves. It was over. He didn’t have to keep striving toward something that seemed impossible to achieve. They had done it, they had won. And now Grizilwood would never have her Stone of Endless Worth and she would never get to do whatever foul thing she had planned for it. All would be well.

“Pardon me,” someone else said to Mirabel and her family, and Alexander’s back stiffened. His blood ran cold, and his throat tightened with an almost unbearable pain.

He pulled himself from his mother’s arms and stared toward the man whose voice was locked away somewhere deep in his memory, never to be forgotten. When their eyes met, Alexander fell back a step, his body trembling.

“Father?” he rasped.
